Background: Kyon was a normal high schooler from a normal high school, living in a normal city with his normal family, getting mostly normal grades and doing his best to act like a normal person. He grew up with his parents and little sister just like any other boy, although unlike most boys, he never believed in a fat man wearing a red suit coming to distribute presents on Christmas Eve. According to the series, the only thing that sets Kyon apart from the rest is this. Besides that, he was just another big brother taking care of a cute-but-mischievous little sister. He also was more than just a little interested in sci-fi specials and supernatural paranormal things, but eventually as he entered his teen years and started his life as a student at North High School, he learned to get used to the undeniable reality that such out-of-this-world things don't exist.
...until he met Haruhi Suzumiya.
He was struck by her peculiarity, along with the fact that she was quite the striking beauty. He couldn't help but want to get to know her and talk to her, since that's what normal people do when starting their first year at high school, after all. Conversation with her went from terse to just down-right weird over the weeks. If anything, it was an interesting part of his day to look forward to at school after making the trek up the hill there every morning. Then suddenly something he said something to her about doing something rather than waiting for something amazing to happen. If there was a trigger, this was it.
Before he knew it, he was dragged by the tie and unwillingly forced to be a part of a new club that Haruhi suddenly decided to found, called the S.O.S. Brigade. As Haruhi began recruiting members left and right, Kyon had no choice but to come along for the ride and make sure she didn't blow anything up on the way. In the beginning, he really wasn't sure why he kept obediently showing up at the club room every day, but he usually ended up regretting it every time Haruhi thought up another insane or embarrassing mission for the brigade to seek after. He didn't mind getting a chance to see Asahina-sempai at the meetings, however.
That wasn't the only thing keeping him around, though. Not long after Haruhi had recruited her 4 members, one by one they each approached him and, through long, complicated dialogue that he really didn't understand 100%, explained that Haruhi Suzumiya was not a normal girl, but a strange anomaly who somehow possessed the power to change the world as she wished. Yuki Nagato, an artificially created human from the "Integrated Data Entity" with amazing super-powers, and Itsuki Koizumi, an esper also with super-powers, were sent by their superiors to help stop Haruhi's world-changing powers from getting out of hand. Mikuru Asahina, a time traveler sent from the future, is simply sent to observe Haruhi, although she had no powers to speak of. All three believe that Kyon is the key, and that Haruhi "chose" him. This doesn't make much sense to him at all, but after seeing some amazing feats performed by these three, he had no choice but to believe their stories.
Needless to say, Kyon found himself to be the participant to a series of unnatural and mind-blowing events from here on out, unintentionally fulfilling all those dreams from his youth of things supernatural and paranormal existing in the world. What choice did he have but to try and go along with it? One wrong step, and Haruhi could just end the world because she didn't like it anymore. All his clues lay in the alien, the esper, and the time traveler, who all pledge very honorable loyalty to Kyon, obviously because he appears to be some sort of key to Haruhi, no matter how he denies it.
Nothing like chaotic adventures to spice up your high school life. He was saved by Yuki from being killed by a rogue agent from the Integrated Data Entity. He was shown, with the help of Itsuki, the existence of "closed space", a kind of alternative dimension that exists alongside their own which serves as a place where tall, dangerous creatures destroy the city whenever Haruhi grew bored and restless. He met with another Mikuru from the future, confirming that Mikuru really was from the future, as shown by the birthmark on her boob that he only knew about because she told him, but that she only knew about because he had told her after that to her younger self. Besides this, though, the key to keeping Haruhi entertained really was through mundane things like winning a baseball tournament, solving a fake murder mystery, emerging victorious against the Computer society in a game that they themselves created, and of course taking the occasional exploitative photos of Mikuru in various costumes.
Why not tag along for that? It definitely made life more interesting for him.
Personality:
Kyon really doesn't have the same amount of guts as the characters from more epic series, and while he has an interest in the strange and weird, he just grows up accepting that life is boring, and you might as well deal with it and have fun when you can. That may be part of why he was attracted to Haruhi; while he sat and talked about doing something to chance things, she actually stood up and did something. In general, Kyon is all talk, and ends up often doing something contradicting his actions; if one were to take Kyon's internal dialogue at surface level, they'd assume that he really isn't having a fun time at all with the SOS brigade. He still goes, though, becoming a slave to routine.
Like any healthy teenage boy, he likes cute girls, and has a soft spot for all the girls in the SOS Brigade, though in varying levels. One might call him a hypocrite for telling Mikuru that he'd protect her from Haruhi doing something embarrassing to her again and then just going and letting Haruhi force the poor girl into a bunny suit, but can you blame the guy? He also is just a little shy, easily made uncomfortable by his personal space being invaded, the absolute opposite of Haruhi. His will might be considered weak because of all this, but I see it as an example of him making excuse in his speech because deep down, he really does want to participate in whatever he ends up participating in. He will put his foot down and say 'no' when he really wants to, after all.
The existence of the front that Kyon puts on is further defined because of the amount of times he thinks things to himself without saying them aloud. Usually these things are sarcastic and spiteful in nature, and it seems that the closer that he gets to the members of the SOS brigade the more he actually voices these internal dialogues externally. One might say that his humorous commentary on the situations he finds himself in to be a coping mechanism.
